Flyway Cities Coalition - Making homes for wildlife on the move

The Process

The Flyway Cities Coalition has developed a three tier strategy for success for creating a wildlife-friendly metropolitan area: building a coalition of stakeholder organizations; educating the community at large through town hall meetings and hosting outreach and restoration events; and training and engaging volunteers working to advance coalition goals through hands-on action in their communities.

Building the Coalition

Step One is to reach out to potential Coalition partners, which may include conservation groups, researchers, wildlife enthusiasts, city planners, volunteer organizations, urban foresters, wildlife managers, water commissions, potential funders, gardening groups and others interested in creating sustainable environments for people and wildlife in their communities.

Step Two is to bring together partner organizations in a working group that will develop strategies for the united work of the Coalition. Together the united Coalition will take on projects the individual organizations could not do alone. Through regular meetings and events the Coalition will unite a diverse group of stakeholders in a common goal of wildlife habitat restoration.

Educating the Community

Building awareness in the community is a priority for the success of the Flyway Cities Coalition. The Coalition will support restoration events; demonstration wildlife habitat projects at schools, parks and other public venues; and other on-the-ground efforts and events that illustrate the importance of restoring and protecting wildlife habitat and provide volunteers with the training and the tools to take action for wildlife in their communities.

Training and Engaging Volunteers

The Flyway Cities Coalition will provide volunteer training programs and resources to train volunteers from local community organizations to become presenters on topics such as creating and sustaining wildlife habitat areas, as well as how to build community awareness about the issues.
