Flyway Cities Coalition - Making homes for wildlife on the move

Background

Why is National Wildlife Federation leading this effort?

The Flyway Cities Coalition addresses all three drivers of National Wildlife Federation’s strategic plan: confronting global warming, restoring wildlife, and connecting people with nature. It responds to concerns about

  • wildlife habitat loss and fragmentation
  • the effects of global warming on wildlife and wildlife habitat
  • human health and fast-paced urban and sedentary suburban lifestyles

National Wildlife Federation has been promoting habitat restoration in urban and suburban backyards, businesses, schools, and other settings for thirty-five years through our Certified Wildlife Habitat Program (formerly the Backyard Wildlife Habitat Program). Through this program, homeowners, schools, businesses and civic organizations utilize sustainable gardening practices to provide the basic needs for wildlife:  food, cover, water, and places to raise young. Using simple guidelines, wildlife enthusiasts and gardeners can give animals back a home and mini-refuge in an otherwise fragmented landscape.

NWF has certified over 100,000 Certified Wildlife Habitats nationwide. These wildlife-friendly landscapes provide a great start towards connecting the landscape for wildlife, but these household efforts alone are not sufficient to build connective landscapes for wildlife to live and migrate through a growing metropolitan area. The Flyway Cities Coalition will provide opportunities for people to take action beyond their own backyards for the critical wildlife habitat in their community, their region, their flyway. The Flyway Cities Coalition hopes to build those connections with public and private partners and concerned communities and individuals in each Flyway City.
